Like (almost) every multi-lingual application, webtrees is written in English, and translated into other languages. In particular, it is written in a form of International English. This uses en_US spelling and grammar, but avoids any en_US terminology or idioms.

For the benefit of users and translators, we should endeavour to be consistent in our use of language and terminology.

When code changes are made, a new translation template file (webtrees.pot) needs to be generated and uploaded to the Launchpad translation server. This is a manual process, and typically happens one or two times a week. If you are a translator, and you need this updating more frequently, contact Greg Roach.

If translators find problems with the translations, they should raise a bug report. Examples of bugs are

• Spelling/grammar errors in the English text.
• Missing context, such as the word "Login", without saying whether this is a noun "enter your login" or a verb "you must login".
• Unclear or badly worded text. The English text should be simple and unambiguous. If you cannot understand it, then our users (even the english speakers!) may also have problems.
